I think we have all come to expect retailers to give refunds on gifts that are not suitable.

Personally I always ask in a shop if I can return an item if it does not suit the person I'm buying it for, before I buy it.

Some shops even offer gift receipts before you even ask.

The Art Shop is not like that. I tried to return a very expensive and inappropriate Christmas gift given to me. There is no way I will ever use it or ever need to spend the equivalent 'credit note' in the shop. There was also no way the proprietor of The Art Shop was going to give a refund.

He is probably within his rights but was his refusal good for business?.
