Dimensions and Exterior
Previous page: The Fire of 1829The ground-plan of the cathedral is in the usual form of a cross, the extreme length being 515 feet, while the breadth across the transepts is 240 feet. In the west front there are three grand entrances, and there is an entrance by each of the transepts, the one by the south transept used on ordinary occasions. The exterior of the cathedral, having been built at different times between the reigns of Henry III. and Henry VII., a period extending to 250 years, presents a general uniformity in the architecture; and though the structure is not rendered conspicuous by an elevated site, it certainly stands out amongst the other buildings of the city and is a truly magnificent site.
