IntroductionEight miles south of the city of York, amidst picturesque scenery on the banks of the River Wharfe, stands the quiet village of Acaster Malbis. The village is a very old and was possibly a Roman settlement as 'castra' means 'camp' in Latin (Malbis relates to the land-owning Malbis family who lived there). In more recent times, most notably in November 2000, the village has suffered from the terrible flooding that York and its surrounding area experience from time to time.
Acaster Malbis was home to the ancient site of a Convent of Nuns of the Cistercian order. There was also a monastery of monks there and tradition relates that a subterranean passage afforded the inmates access to each other.
